A lot of people say it's The Wire, and I'm inclined to agree.
It takes a while to get into, as there are so many characters and so many story arcs going on. But once you do get into it, it's absolutely gripping.
- It's as full of suspense as the best thrillers and cop shows, you're always wanting to know what's going to happen next
- It's as intelligent and thought-provoking as the best serious dramas around.
- It's about real life and things we all know about from personal experience, but it also lets us into worlds most of us never get to see
- There's not many shows that have so much affection for so many of their characters.
- Brilliant writing. Some of the lines leave you thinking "If Shakespeare lived in a modern American city, he might've written a line like that".
Slightly spoilery video from Season 2...

It has to have one of the largest and most dedicated followings among any TV show broadcast.
Quoting verbatim from wikipedia:
"The Star Trek media franchise is a multi-billion dollar industry"
The market penitration for Star Trek merchandise is amazing.
They even have "Star Trek: The Experience" in Las Vegas!

I agree also. And I enjoyed the video too - Omar is my favourite character from The Wire.

I would put my money on Star Trek. It has to have one of the largest and most dedicated followings among any TV show broadcast.

It’s really hard to comment on current show because they have not withstood the test of time. And as far as picking a show being the best how exactly do you do that? Popularity? Then you have long running shows such as law & Order, Gun Smoke or Lassie, Star Trek became immensely popular in syndication. A lot of people thought that I Love Lucy was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then you have your shows that push the envelope like Soap in the late 70s or social issues on All in the Family which was also a very popular show, or animation like the Simpsons, South Park and one of my favorites Family Guy. You also have shows that are lovable like the Muppets or shows that some of us just have to watch like House. Or some of the great basic cable shows like Burn Notice or HBO shows like the Sopranos. It is really hard to pick a best show.
