It can be
1) A specific breed of smallish canine. (The ones I've known were all cute, playful, and intelligent).

2) A Pick-up Game or Pick-up Gamer (PuG) - online gaming term - generally an individual new player or group of new players (also referred to as noob or noobs). Sometimes used as a derogatory term (although not always)

The Pug is a small breed of dog with a wrinkly, short muzzled face. A pug has a curled tail, and pugs may make little snorting sounds. The word "pug" may have come from the Old English pugg or "puge", which were affectionate terms for a playful little devil or monkey. Pug puppies are often called puglets. The breed is often summarized as multum in parvo ("much in little"), describing the Pug's remarkable personality despite its small size.

No problem... I thought about adding this as its own answer... but decided its probably the dog that was the answer, and seeing as you'd also added a number 2 to your list then it made sense to add mine as a number 3.

btw.. Pug is the 'strange' kid in the middle.

And now i realize that I clicked answer instead of reply for my comment....

(Everyone, please ignore this and don't consider it as a best answer)
