Nope, a "man crush" is not usually considered gay at all. Far from a romantic feeling, a "man crush" is usually when one man idolizes a man to a great extent - even to the point of mimicking, or following them around, going out on the town with them.
The whole point of the "man crush" is that it's platonic and cute, mainly because it resembles a romantic homosexual crush, but ISN'T.

For instance, my husband has a "man crush" on Ian McKellen - whoops, I mean "Sir" Ian McKellen. He is pushing me to type in the "Sir" just because he saw the picture. See?

@gno, apparently our guys have a thing for the Brits! My boyfriend has a total thing for David Tennant, of Dr. Who fame.

No. I think a "man crush" is a cute and ironic way for a straight male to say that another dude is handsome. Obviously, some guys ARE handsome, so by saying "I have a man-crush on George Clooney" you can be clever about it. It might be that some people who use the phrase "man crush" really are closeted gay, but really, if you were gay and out and had a crush on Clooney, you'd just say "I have a crush on George Clooney." I haven't heard many guys use the phrase "man crush," but I've heard plenty of women admit to a "girl crush" (oooh, look at the sexism there "girl" vs. "man"). Anyhow, I think by definition, "man crush" is a phrase that is implicitly NOT gay.

Not at all. I think man crushes are totally normal and hetero, along the lines of "bromances." No gay guy I know would call a crush on another gay (or straight) man a man crush. @gno, apparently our guys have a thing for the Brits! My boyfriend has a total thing for David Tennant, of Dr. Who fame.
