It isn't a recommendation I've found, and I can imagine it would be dangerous because of how fast the water could become heated. You wouldn't want to be boiled alive! (Wondering how fast that could happen...).
wildfire survival guide notes that if you are by a structure, hiding inside the structure is the safest. By the time the fire line passes, you should likely still have time to escape the building before it's engulfed in flames (hopefully).
More importantly, just be sure to evacuate long before you're put in a position to make those types of split-second decisions. And don't forget to bring your pets with you! (please encourage your neighbors to do the same also, or offer to take the pets for them!)

Most deaths from fire occur from smoke inhalation. Although you could avoid becoming burnt by sitting in a pool, it would do nothing to prevent you from inhaling poisonous smoke. If I were in that situation, I would wet my body completely in the pool, then try to escape the fire as quickly as possible, keeping low to the ground where the smoke is least accumulated.

I remember this one couple that survived in their pool in one of the San Diego fires a couple of years back. The were prepared to leave, but the winds changed suddenly and their pool was their only option. Not a good plan A, but about all that is left when you must turn to plan B. http://www.insideedition.com/storyprint.aspx?SpecialReportID=1029
