No. Spongebob is not gay. He's a cartoon character. He doesn't have a penis. He doesn't have a sexual drive. He doesn't even have a real mouth. He cannot be gay.

What you probably heard part of was some older news that some gay rights activists are using Spongebob, and other famous cartoon characters, to start in a video supporting ~homosexual tolerance and understanding~.

This, too, does not make Spongebob gay. Nor does it make the viewers gay.

But some super Christian groups are shouting that this will "turn their kids gay". Yeah. I don't even know how to react to that. It's absurd reasoning, and I can't understand why preaching tolerance would ever be a bad thing.

...but then again, I'm not a Christian.

Idiocy and intolerance is not limited to Christians but is a common front for people who can't think without help. While many hide behind one banner or another to spew rhetoric, ultimately it's the people that are to blame. Not the institution. Yet some institutions (within various Christian organizations) specifically target those prone to "supermarket tabloid" logic.

Cartoon characters and their effect on society is a popular gaff in that most parents let their kids loose with TV and fail to form their own opinions.

Although I would never blame an entire faith or population, I think that much of the Christian institution does propagate this "gay is evil" image. Taking it a step further and forming sites, such as my source above, is just a half step beyond the intolerance being preached to a lot of good people every Sunday.

No, then you misread my answer. I was trying to demonstrate that Spongebob is not a human. He's not living. He's not breathing.

I don't disagree with you in principle. But don't be so quick to read judgment into my answer. It was a lame attempt to be comical and make a point, that's all.

Good answer and I agree with the sentiment (and I thought it was funny), but cartoon characters CAN be gay. Like Stewie on Family Guy. But yes, in a kids cartoon that has no sexual content, the hubbub is idiotic. Now the hot sponge-on-squirrel action that goes on... THAT's immoral.

From Wikipedia:
"In 2005, a promotional video which showed SpongeBob along with other characters from children's shows singing together to promote diversity and tolerance, was attacked by an evangelical group in the United States because they saw the character SpongeBob being used as an advocate for homosexuality. James Dobson of Focus on the Family accused the makers of the video of promoting homosexuality due to a pro-homosexual group sponsoring the video.
The incident led to questions to whether or not SpongeBob is homosexual. Creator of the character, Stephen Hillenburg, had previously denied that SpongeBob was gay in 2002 when SpongeBob's popularity with gay men grew. He clarified that the character is asexual. After Dobson made the comments, Hillenburg repeated this assertion that sexual preference was never considered during the creation of the show. Tom Kenny and other production members were shocked and surprised that such an issue had arisen.
Dobson later asserted that his comments were taken out of context and that his original complaints were not with SpongeBob, the video, or any of the characters in the video but with the organization that sponsored the video, We Are Family Foundation. Dobson indicated that the We Are Family Foundation posted pro-homosexual material on their website, but later removed it. After the controversy, John H. Thomas, the United Church of Christ's general minister and president, said they would welcome SpongeBob into their ministry. He said 'Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we'"

I'm glad that's what Wikipedia has to say (and we all know what a reliable source that is, wink, wink!), but my source below says otherwise.
