Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
i cant get back to the menu screen (to access texts, mail etc) i also cant turn the phone off no matter how long i hold the button down
I press the centre button and it only goes to favourites, i have tried to turn it off and no matter how long i hold the button down it only locks it and doesnt allow me to slide to turn it off

Just an FYI - you need to hold down two buttons to turn off the iPhone. These are the home button and the top right button. When you hold these down you should be able to turn it off from the red slider that will appear. This is a good idea to do after you have installed anything new and might solve your menu screen woes. If this is still a problem, I would take it into your local Mac Store.
