In big cities (like Chicago), I find the standard is 15% plus the next dollar up.

I am so glad you asked this question, and would be more than willing to answer it... Tips can only better a man, and the more tips you have, the more wisdom they'll gain, because sitting in that cab all day, driving people around does not offer much brain exercise,so I'm sure they appreciate any help they can get when it comes to educating the stupid impaired of the world! So tip away, in fact, heres a tip I can offer you to share with others... It is better to to keep ones mouth shut, and have people think you are a twit, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

That's strange - I'm not sure where in the world you are but I'm English and we don't tend to tip taxi drivers, unless it's an airport-run or just if the change is going to be a small amount and not worth waiting for them to count it out. It's not expected here, but I guess in some countries it must be.
