When people are cremated are they burned, or are their bodies/bones grinded?
I know a morbid question, but we're debating over dinner if the bones burns.

I've been to a crematory. They are most certainly burned in a VERY large oven. And it takes a long time to do so as there is so much water and such to burn off first. But if you read in the link below after everything is burnt it is then "processed" into a fine powder. In otherwords they grind up the ashes. The link below has an excellent explaination of the entire process.

The body is burned in either a casket or container that is placed in the cremation chamber, where the temperature is raised to approximately 1400 degrees to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. After approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours, all organic matter is consumed by heat or evaporation. The remaining bone fragments are known as cremated remains. The cremated remains are then carefully removed from the cremation chamber. Any metal is removed with a magnet and later disposed of in an approved manner. The cremated remains are then processed into fine particles and are placed in a temporary container provided by the crematory or placed in an urn purchased by the family. The entire process takes approximately three hours.

Cremation is defined as the incineration of a dead body. So obviously it means that there is no grinding of bones involved. The process normally entails the complete burning of tissue and bones to ash which can be stored in an urn,or sprinkled preferably in a river like what most hindus do in the Ganges River.

According to the National Funeral Directors Association, cremation is a "two-step process." The first would be the exposure of the deceased to intense heat for several hours, which leaves behind just ash and bone fragments. The second step is gathering and running the remaining bone pieces "through a processor, creating a uniform powder-like texture."Source(s):

Bodies that are creamated are incinerated, burned at a very high temperature, hot enough that even bones will burn. Under more "normal" conditions (as in the sorts of fires that occur by accident rather than design) bones will burn to some extent, but will rarely be completely consumed.
