Sure it's Feb 2; but, that's not very interesting. Why is it Feb 2? It appears probable that this date approximates the beginning of Spring in an ancient, pre-Roman calendar that resembled that of Chinese astronomy. By that reckoning, the four seasons of the temperate world begin thus: Spring - Groundhog Day, Summer - May Day, Fall - Lughnasadh, Winter - Halloween. The fall holiday is scarcely remembered, but Groundhog Day and May Day still get some attention. Halloween, of course, is becoming more popular every year.

It doesn't always quite work out, but this year Chinese Groundhog day falls on the Western Groundhog day!
