The only real choices you have are Sepulveda which weaves under the 405, or some of the local roads east of the 405 like Beverly Glen, Benedict Canyon and Coldwater Canyon. However, those three canyon roads are one lane and get just as crushed.
You basically can't take the 405 from the 101 to the 10 during rush hour (8:30 to 10am or 4pm to 6:30pm) without hitting massive traffic.
Getting DASH GPS unit or checking sigalert before you travel is a good idea as well because it will tell exactly how bad it is.

What is the best way to get around traffic on the 405 between the 101 and the 10?
Traffic between the 101 and the 10 in Los Angeles is the worst: is there a
good way to get around it?

Jason, do you know if that's the source of data used by Google Maps' traffic overlay? I find that that traffic info tends to be delayed by up to 30 minutes sometimes, which is often too much latency to be useful. I'd like to get the info as directly as possible.
