What is Commercial Paper?

I keep hearing that term thrown around with respect to the current financial
crisis and
I have no idea what it means.

According to Financial Guide.net, Commercial Paper, or CP, is "short term unsecured debt issued by companies in the form of promissory notes"

According to Bond Exchange, Commercial Paper is "short-term unsecured promissory notes issued by a corporation"

According to fund.ci.com, Commercial Paper is "short-term debt securities issued by corporations, banks, and other borrowers"

According to Wikipedia, " commercial paper is an unsecured promissory note with a fixed maturity of one to 270 days".

It is normally used as a way of paying off short-term debts.
