Variable subscription model (freemium) is next after ad-supported. Then comes referral, followed by sale of virtual goods.

The next way would be subscription but this really only works well for established brands in niches where people are conditioned to pay for high quality news and analysis (eg The Economist) and often the subscription to the web site is free to print subscribers and has very few other subscribers.

I believe that the answer is that there are very few examples of content sites being monetised through anything other than advertising. The next way would be subscription but this really only works well for established brands in niches where people are conditioned to pay for high quality news and analysis (eg The Economist) and often the subscription to the web site is free to print subscribers and has very few other subscribers.
