Free alternatives to Pretty Link Pro?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Search RegEx -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-regex/
Lets you search and replace across all of the content on your blog. You could use this to change links or make sure a specific word is always linked to one page etc.
Bird Feeder -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bird-feeder/
Does one thing and one thing only; it publishes a tweet when you publish a blog post. You can customize the message that goes out too!
Broken Link Checker -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/broken-link-checker/
Provides a tab so you can see all of the links on your site that are broken or lead to redirects. Could be handy for what you want to do.
Twitter ReTweet -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twitter-retweet/
Twitter ReTweet provides a function that displays a ReTweet link which gives visitors the ability to ReTweet the current post; supports custom URLs (perfect for Google Analytics Campaign Tracking).
Short URL Plugin -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/short-url-plugin/
allows you to create shorter URL's and keeps track of how many times a link has been clicked. It's useful for managing downloads, keeping track of outbound links and for masking URL's.
And here is a tutorial on how to do A/B testing in WordPress using the Google Website Optimizer tool -> http://carsonified.com/blog/business/how-to-do-ab-testing-in-wordpress/
All of these are completely free! Is there anything else Pretty Link Pro does that I didn't include? It's hard to wade through all of the marketing copy.

But it looks like this program is in a league of its own and new at the moment. So finding alternatives atleast for me was a dead end.
Also this person tells you how to use the free version. But I will keep digging around for a bit trying to find something for you. Hopefully these links help point you in a better direction.

M$I don't know this might be something you want to check out too. http://www.shauninman.com/archive/2009/08/17/less_n
I would read through it though to make sure it is what you might need or use.
Your are right it is a pretty slick addon. Your also right that 97 dollars is way to high for an addon. So can't blame you for not wanting to use it. I sure wouldn't want too either and would be doing the same thing you are. Finding free alternatives. I hope that you get enough free alternatives together you make a site about them. I am still digging around a bit see if I can come up with some more stuff. So what do you think about the things I found so far? Helpful or am I way off base?
I personally did purchase the pro version and love it. I'm just wondering though, how much would you pay for something like this? I mean I understand the free beer, free speech thing but these plugin authors should make some money if they spend a lot of time on these things don't you think?
Ok I found this that might be an add on that interests you but its a firefox addon maybe it will help.

Yes that's mine. I agree it's a pretty slick plugin and while I disagree with the cost, what I really disagree with is the way she was promoting it. I am hoping to provide alternatives, instead of just complaining.
