You can look at some of the odds yourself. This is from the (WAY nonscientific FootballLocks.com: http://www.footballlocks.com/nfl_futures_odds.shtml)

The right column has the amount of money you'd win if you bet $100 on a 2010 Super Bowl winner today. The lower the amount of winnings, the more likely they are to win.

As you can see, the most likely winners by odds are:
1. Patriots
2. Steelers
3 (tie). Colts
3 (tie). Giants
5. Cowboys

I don't think they're calculating the odds using statistics. I do think it's a legitimate guess that the Pats will win again. They went 18-1 two years ago, and 11-5 with a quarterback who had never started an NFL game. Having one of the best quarterbacks come back from injury has to give them a leg up on the competition.

I'm no Pats fan, but I sure as heck don't want to play them this year.
