I will second haimtime's answer that this mythical national championship that teams play for now is just that, mythical. While I do not want to see bowl games eliminated completely as they provide money for local communities and the participating schools, an official playoff is needed. It could even blend in with the bowl games, rotating which bowl games are part of the playoff, just as the BCS title game is rotated between venues.

With that said, under the current structure, I do think Utah should be the 2008 champion. Because of the biased polls, the Utes were underestimated throughout the regular season. As they proved in the Sugar Bowl, they are a top-notch team who recorded a perfect season and should be rewarded for that.

No. There should be no national title. Overblown athletic programs in colleges distract their students and administrations from academic studies. Even worse, the money that has become involved leads to corruption of the students and the faculty. Colleges which spend any dollars at all on competitive athletics should be ineligible for any government grants or support whatsoever.

I agree they deserve more respect, but based on their strength of schedule, I would say no. Every year we go through the same question (Last year with Hawaii), but the strength of schedule argument is still there. There will never be a true legit #1 team until a playoff system is created.

Any team that goes undefeated (no matter what the sport) should get a chance at their sport's national championship in my opinion. When rankings and championship game entries are selected by commentators and analysts, it removes the objective competitive nature that makes sports so compelling. Sports are much more interesting when anyone has a chance of winning, not just the teams that had a tough schedule to begin with.
