From the the first photo you linked to in the reply, it does not look like a punch at all. His right elbow is pointing outwards - would a boxer fight with chicken arms? His left arm is in a clearly defensive position.
In the second one, it almost looks like he is punching the player, but it's very hard to tell from that perspective - his elbow looks like it could be angled significantly outwards, and the player is simply starting to come in to contact with it.
It also appears that the first and second photos are reversed, time wise.
Had he punched the man, would his elbow gone flying outward as his forearm got pushed in, or would something else happen?
I get the same vibe from the video. It looks like it was a defensive reaction. He probably pushed some (or more than some) to keep the player from running him over.

Did NFL referee Garth DeFelice really punch St. Louis Rams player Kenneth Darby?
I just stumbled upon this page and I can't believe what I'm seeing... what happened? Has DeFelice spoken about this yet?

The official threw his arm up to brace himself which is a natural reaction. Unfortunately it looks like he's intentionally punching or throwing a forearm shiver, which I doubt is the case. He's just defending/protecting himself. There was a similar situation in a college game which actually looked much more intentional than this, but that official was let off the hook. I believe it was an LSU game against Alabama perhaps.

I agree with that he was defending himself naturally...I need to bring that ref to my Krav Maga classes.
