Sure. You can admire some aspects of a person's life and not others. I look up to Martin Luther King, Jr tremendously, but many historians claim that he was unfaithful. No human is without fault. The majority of kids are way more influenced by people in their real life than they could ever be by a celebrity, athlete or otherwise. If my child looked up to an athlete who I felt was a bad influence, I'd try to use it as a teachable moment to show the child that even the most talented of people make mistakes. In my opinion, being unfaithful in itself does not make someone an unsuitable role model. However, I think there is a big distinction between the words "role model" and "hero." Steve McNair was a talented individual, but not a hero.

I've never understood why Athletes need to be 'heroes', they're just some guy/gal doing a job, that is usually waaaaaay overpaid, they have too much media coverage, etc.. and it often cuses them to act in ways the rest of us never would.

The same goes for musicians and movie stars.

You'd be best to look for you 'heroes' in people whoa ctually try to better themselves and/or the lives of others, such as medical practictioners, scientists, aid volunteers and philanthropists.

You answered the question?

--QUOTE--

The fact that so many kids look up to all these baseball players, basketball players and football players simply makes them role models. Here is an example, when you become a parent you automatically become a role model whether you like it or not.

The minds of those that say "athletics are not role models" are doing some wishful thinking; really they should not be role models but they are and that's a fact that no one can change.

"Should professional athletics be role models?" is not a valid question because they have no choice in the matter - THEY ARE ROLE MODELS!

I don't think they should be, not exactly setting a good role model for kids.

I think it depends on who is looking up to the athlete. If you can compartmentalize that he made a mistake in his personal life and he worked hard to be a good football player, then sure.

Personally, I do not think that a 'hero' would cheat on his wife. So it would rule him out of the running...
