I love No Frills. It DOES help that it's the only grocery store in walking distance from my house, but they have great deals. Everything is cheaper than average. Their produce is honestly the best in the city as far as chain grocers go.... There are a few independent specialty places like Sunripe Marketplace that have EXCELLENT produce but your also paying $2.99 for a grapefruit there (though it'll be the best freakin' grapefruit you ever had), but for chains, it wins. Their non-perishables all go on AWESOME sales in cycles of about 3 months at a time, so you have a few weeks to stock up on a good amount and then all new things go on sale. And the things on sale are pretty much unbeatable prices. They'll have steak or chicken breast on sale for 1/8 of the normal price and you can buy a ton of it and keep it in the freezer.
The downside to no frills is that because they have "no frills" you don't get things like a deli or premade food or a bakery.
A&P is also great, but it's much too expensive and their produce is horrible comparatively. Still, I make a trip there every few months to hit the deli and get some potato wedges.
I loved Whole Foods when I visited Austin.. they had so many great and unusual things you wouldn't see in Canada.. I could have spent all day there! Plus, it was the US meaning you can buy beer at the grocery store.. That's UNHEARD of in Ontario. You gotta go to "the Beer Store", "Wine Rack" or "LCBO" (Liquor control board of ontario) here since it's all government controlled!

Wegmans has a great selection of products at a reasonable price. They also have a really nice organic section.

Growing up I became extremely use to Meijer's and now that I live in Ohio, without one nearby, I do miss it a great deal so I guess that would be my favorite http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e0/Meijer-Midland-MI-July-16-2006.jpg

Where I grew up there was nothing but Safeway, which was pretty nice. But I really like Nugget in the Sacramento area of California. Its a little pricey but it has a lot of the hippy stuff I love (incense, natural goods, ect...) http://www.nuggetmarket.com/

Gluten Free Specialty in downtown Sacramento! I'm gluten free and am so lucky and so happy that there is an all gluten free store near where I live. I know no matter what everything in the store is safe for me. It's so much better than having to worry about where the gluten free section ends and the wheat-containing food begins in any old health food store.

For everyday shopping I go to Harris Teeter, but for treats I go a bit more upscale. There's a co-op where I live that has really good bread and fruit - a lot of times when they have sales it's even cheaper than the supermarkets. And if I have some extra money to spend I like Fresh Market.

I find Whole Foods Market to be the best...but they are pricey. If I could afford it, I'd do my regular everyday grocery shopping there. Wegmans has a great selection of products at a reasonable price. They also have a really nice organic section.

We have a very nice one out here in Santa Cruz County, CA, called Nob Hill. The atmosphere is great, and the fresh food is always top quality. Their prices are a little higher than elsewhere, so in this economy I'm not shopping there, but it's still a great store.
