Why do Mandarin oranges only come in cans? Has anyone seen an actual Mandarin orange?

Canned mandarin segments are peeled to remove the white pith prior to canning; otherwise, they turn bitter.

I buy seedless mandarins at my local farmers market all the time. For some reason the main stream grocery stores seem to carry oranges and tangerines but mandarins are harder to find. In Northern California the closest in a grocery store is a box of "cuties"
