Cheerios are known to be very social creatures and they tend to congregate in groups. That's why you can find them all piled together inside boxes for easy capturing. When you pour part of the social group into a bowl of milk, it's only natural that they should swim toward each other and float together in clusters.
In the animal kingdom, different creatures have special words to describe a grouping of their species. Some of the more common examples are:
pride of lions
flock of geese
herd of cows
There are interesting and odd ones too, like:
unkindness of ravens
murder of crows
bask of crocodiles
Do you know what a grouping of Cheerios is called? It's called a ploop.
