Another part of the reason was the fading of the fairy fad that was at its height from the 1880's to about WW1. The whole zeitgeist that had produced it changed. Parenting books advised against hugging or even showing affection to children; on the advice of psychologists some children's authors suddenly turned against fantasy. Perhaps this was all a reaction to the horrors of the war, but the upshot was that "fairy" ceased to be a selling point in some areas.

Why did they change the name of fairy floss to cotton candy in 1920? What was the reason for this?

The name Fairy Floss is still used in parts of the world when talking about Cotton Candy. The name differences are likely due to cultural differences and the wish to distinguish different companies production of similar products.
