According to this article, Caramel Corn was first invented by Frederick William Rueckheim and his brother Louis Rueckheim who decided to try covering the Popcorn that they made with molasses. The new invention, termed "Candied Popcorn and Peanuts" debuted at the first World's Fair in Chicago and eventually became known as "Cracker Jacks."
