What's the best web service where I can collect and map my "culinary adventures"?
i.e. list of restaurants and mapping of them for a given location. looked into tupalo.com so far. but that doesn't seem to offer that possibility.

Hi Franz, you can do this with http://tupalo.com, on every spot page there is a "been there" button.
This collects all of your "been theres" (visited spots), into a 'set', which is then available in your user profile (under the sets tab). The collection is public, the URL can be shared.
For example: http://tupalo.com/en/users/153/sets/been
or http://tupalo.com/en/users/322/sets/favorites
However there is no widget to plugin to your blog or other sites, YET, though that feature could be coming in the near future.

Using Google, you can create simple placemarks, add your own text & photos (personal reviews) and share your map with your friends.

You might want to also look at Yelp, though it's mapping features might not be what you want.
Yelp will let you write reviews for restaurants which you can later browse, and it has a mini map applet that will show a small map with a recent location. The map shows a very small area and refreshes every few seconds to cycle through your reviewed locations.
Some other things you might like:
- Shows you recent reviews physically near you
- You can add bookmarks for places you want to visit, and see most recent reviews submitted for those places when you login. You can also see the bookmarked places on a map on your profile pages
- Ability to add invite friends to service or add existing ones to share information
- Other means of messaging, topic threads, etc., about restaurants across all yelp users.
- Yelp handles reviews for other sorts of businesses as a bonus if you want to track more than restaurants

well, thank you for your efforts, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. it really would be tupalo.com or qype sort of service, but they lack the mapping feature. ideally, there would be this kind of database, but on a peronalized profile page I could map the locations I have checked off as visited.

It is restaurant review community, basically like social bookmarking for restaurants. You can create a profile, add reviews, see your choices on maps, see what others say about them, keep a friends list etc.
It also has an iPhone App.
That comes into play big time as people do things like snapping pictures of the restaurant, their food, even the menu. And of course it's handy for checking out places to go when you are somewhere unfamiliar.
I don't know if there are other sites that do the same thing, but I love the features. It's one thing to read some guys review, but it's a lot nicer to see a pic of the place, and be able to read a menu!

thx philipy, but it seems to be limited to anglophone countries and not available worldwide. so if skylabops is right that will be my choice, I guess.
