What's the best hot sauce?

I'm looking for FLAVOR rather than HEAT, however I do want something with a good kick. Just so you know my tastes:

-I am not a big fan of the flavor of Tabasco sauce.
-I like Cholula and am actually a fan of the Del Scorcho hot sauce from Del Taco, but after drenching all my food with them for a long time, these just don't have enough spiciness for me anymore.

What do you think I'd like best?

Frosty beat me to it. When you think of hot sauce, you traditionally think of gross american chemical burn hot sauce that tastes like it came from a gag gift store. This asian Sriracha Hot Chilli sauce is not to be missed. It's not just a dressing for your food. It should be used in cooking to enhance the flavor of most dishes.

The Winking Lizard makes some great hot sauce. Check them out here and try out a six pack of BBQ sauce. Order it online, it's pretty hot and award winning, packed with flavor!

In our house we swear by Tapatio sauce. It's got way better flavor than tabasco, and just the right amount of kick. I go out of my way to buy a big bottle of this stuff since my usual grocery store doesn't stock it.

Tabasco is the real Tabasco. But, there are many types of great hot sauces just as there are many types of great beer or wine. Two particularly good brands (each makes several sauces) which have not been mentioned and which are among my favorites are Melinda's and Marie Sharp's. They both had the same origin in Belize with a mixture of habanero pepper and vegetable juices; but, there was a dispute between the originator and the distributor. Now Melinda's is from Costa Rica. They are the original habanero sauces! I have enjoyed them for many years.

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Frank's Redhot. It's hot but has an amazing flavor. It's the secret to the best Buffalo wings. I use it on everything. Everyone should try it. Mix it with butter for Buffalo wings and other Buffalo chicken recipes.

I second Billy Bones for BBQ sauce. Billy Bones has the best ribs IMO.

Good thing I'm not from Louisiana, then. It tastes too strongly of vinegar. That's not the flavor I'm looking to add to my food!

Hey, I love hot sauce!! I found a killer site that as a huge selection of hot sauces. They are also broken down into three categories so you can pick the right hotness for you The Authentic Louisiana Seafood or alseafood.com is great. I have ordered from them already and I will order more stuff in the future.

My favorite is "Buckeye BBQ" from Quaker Steak and Lube. You can buy it at their online store at: http://quakersteak.securetree.com/. It's rated at 5,000 SHU's (Shoville Heat Units - the number of units of water it takes to make a unit of chili pepper lose all traces of heat), which seems high, but is not too bad - the bit of sweetness takes the edge off the heat.

Regular Tabasco just doesn't cut it but our favorite is a hard-to-find garlic Tabasco -- great on pizza and in Mexican and Italian dishes!

I really like Micanopy Gold.

Their website is being renovated so you'd have to give them a call to get more info. Basically their hot sauce is a sweet habanero-based one which has a really nice kick and smooth flavor. I'm salivating now just thinking of it.

All of the above listed hot sauces are just the same variation on tabasco, which you say you don't like. The reason you probably don't like it is because they are all vinegar based, I never liked the vinegar based hot sauces either. try an asian style hot sauce rather than a mexican hot sauce, with the asian hot sauce it is in oil rather than vinegar. My favorite is Sambal, this is the generic term for an indonesian hot sauce where thai chili peppers are baked first the sauce has a very deep and rich flavor, along these lines you can add lime juice, this is the classic thai chili lime sauce, the thai people believe that you must have all five tastes for a perfect sauce, spicy, sour, sweet, bitter, salty. Go to any asian market or to the asian section of your grocery store and look for anything that says Sambal. If you are vegetarian please note that many of the sambals are flavored with fish. Just keep a close eye on the ingrediant list and make sure vinegar is not the first ingrediant. If you are adventuress you can make your own by frying chilipepers in some sesame oil there are many recipes online for homemade sambal.

It's true I don't like strong vinegar flavor in my hot sauce, but I do like some vinegar based sauces... Cholula has vinegar and I quite enjoy it. Thanks for the tip, though!

Bufalo chipotle in adobo is really smoky and flavorful, but also quite spicy.
