What's recipe do you follow for making good ranch salad dressing at home?

I've tried making ranch salad dressing numerous times, but every time it turns out not good to say the least. The recipe can not contain buttermilk.

I go to Sam's Wholesale and buy the Ranch Dressing mix or you can get in the grocery store in a packet. It is a dry mix you mix with mayo or milk. Or make a dip with sour cream. It is delicious! So easy, the way to go.

While I am sure that is a good product, I asked for a recipe. I can not have gluten, and thus can only use specific brands of mayo and sour cream, etc. that would be used in making ranch dressing. Moreoever I know the dip mix from hidden valley is not safe for me. I prefer to make everything from scratch.

I am sorry about that I did not read that properly. Thanks for calling it to my attention. Here is one I found that is suppose to be gluten free. Hope this one will work for you. Came from Epicurious.

Ranch Dressing

3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons powdered cultured buttermilk blend* (Check ingredients to see if your brand is gluten-free. It usually is!)
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons finely chopped celery leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried dillweed
*Available alongside the canned and powdered milk in most supermarkets.

Whisk first 3 ingredients in large bowl. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and chill at least 1 hour to blend flavors. (Dressing can be prepared 5 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

Makes 1 1/2 cups.

One option for you *might* be Frontier Herbs Certified Organic Ranch Salad Dressing Mix. They also make a dip mix. It's available at health food stores. The ingredient list says the flavoring contains corn and dairy derivatives and lactic acid.

Have you tried subbing plain kefir for the buttermilk? I know many commercial buttermilks are artificially thickened with wheat-derived ingredients. Is that the source of the trouble for you? Lifeway kefir is supposed to be gluten-free. It's thick and a bit tart like buttermilk.

Here is an excellent recipe for ranch dressing. Just swap out the buttermilk for Kefir and you should be good to go:

Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Recipe
INGREDIENTS
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon chopped fresh chives
1/4 teaspoon of dry dill (or a teaspoon chopped fresh)

In a medium bowl, stir together the buttermilk and mayonnaise until fully mixed. Add in the other ingredients, adjusting for taste.
Makes about 1 1/2 cups. Keeps for a week, covered in the fridge.

For myself, I'd make it with soured raw milk instead of buttermilk, but you may not have that available. Sour raw milk gets pretty thick and nicely tart, not putrid like pasteurized milk does. It's a good substitute. Real buttermilk is very thin and delicious, but wouldn't work in modern ranch recipes.

I specified it had to be a recipe without buttermilk.

That's why you use kefir instead.
