My Mommy learned from her Mommy how to make Wacky Cake.
It was a recipe used during the depression when things like eggs and milk were rationed, or hard to come by.
It is the most delicious cake (to this day) I have ever tasted.
There are sites that have a version of the recipe
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Wacky-Cake-VIII/Detail.aspx
But my Mom would make a great chocolate icing with just cocoa powder, butter, powdered sugar and a splash of vanilla.
(she also added raisins to the batter...mmmm)
I suggest that everyone try making this cake once. It's fun!
I now have the honor of making this cake as a third generation!

She would always let me taste the doe to, which was great!
Nowadays my mother still uses the same recipe, since my grandmother has died a couple years ago. But we cook it in the same spirit, and as a tribute to her. And it still tastes as good as ever.

Adding cinnamon to broiled chicken.
It's not really a family secret and there are plenty of additional ingredients for this combination on the internet, but (my mother and) I pretty much stuck with the chicken and the cinnamon.
In my college years I introduced this not so complicated dish to a body builder roommate who was on a pretty much all chicken diet and he was very happy with my mothers passed down wisdom.

My favourite childhood thing was something my grandma made though. It's a cold cake (I mean without baking), made with just chocolate and old cookies and to this day I haven't tasted anything like that ever again. It's a cake from the post-war rationing era in Germany called "Kalter Hund" (Cold Dog). It's so famous in Germany you can even buy it factory made, but of course that isn't even half as good as grandma's.

As a child this was the most fun way to eat an egg we could imagine. For her I'm sure this was the quickest way to feed three young, growing boys before sending them off to school and running to work at the hospital.
If you ever get the chances to make this recipe I highly recommend it. Here it is again:
Egg in a Cup by Jason's Mom
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Toast a piece of bread.
2. Cut the toast into 1/4" squares and dump the toast into a nice big coffee cup.
3. Boil an egg in the shell for 2-3 minutes (i.e. so the yolk is still weak).
4. crack open the shell and scoop the egg into the cup of toast.
5. whip the egg and toast around for 30 seconds or until the toast is completely soaked in egg.
6. add a little salt and pepper.
Enjoy!!!
Note: for adults use two pieces of toast and two eggs. :-)

What was your favorite food your Mom made you when you were a kid? Do you still make it with her recipe?
Mine was chicken and dumplings. And yes, when I make it I make it just like she taught me. : )

I have to go one further and mention my grandmother. She used to make a cake recipe when I was just a kid, and I remember always looking up when she was mixing it and just be amazed at how it tasted. She would always let me taste the doe to, which was great!

My mom & I used to make pancakes from the same cookbook! Once when I was 5 I tried to make them by myself while my parents slept in Sat. AM. I used a cup instead of a tablespoon of sugar. It burned immediately in the electric skillet & my mom smelled it & woke up. She had to make the batter into a cake.

My favorite food that my Mother prepared and served for 21 years is FRIED SHRIMP. She would go to the Fresh Seafood Market, purchase one pound of shrimp, carefully iced down, return home to clean and devein them, fry them in peanut oil, until a light bread crumb batter for 5 minutes...golden brown...and YES, I still it at least once a month!!!

There is only one thing my mom made for us that I still love: Lasagne. The way she made it was amazing, even though it wouldn't count as Lasagne to a real Italian or even someone who is used to normal italian food. I tried to make it a few times for her birthday, but it often ended in disaster. My favourite childhood thing was something my grandma made though. My mom made something called "egg in a cup" for us. Basically she would boil and egg the scoop it out of the shell and dump it in a cup of cut up toast. The yoke would be weak but the white part would be firm, so when she stirred the 1/4" squares of toast around in the cup they would get coated with the egg. As a child this was the most fun way to eat an egg we could imagine. For her I'm sure this was the quickest way to feed three young, growing boys before sending them off to school and running to work at the hospital.

Actually I have two favorite. One is chicken adobo with potatoes and string beans with soy sauce and garlic. YUMMMMMY. The other one is kare-kare which is actually mixed with peanut butter, ox tail, tripes, bok choy, string beans, eggplant, garlic, and ginger. YUMMMMMY TOO. I love cooking them today and serving it off the stove right away to my fiance and daughter. and these are filipino cuisines.
