Is there another choice besides grilled cheese?
It must be made with real butter! And to be just right, American cheese.
The responses here make me think that back around 1957, there must have been some woman's show or magazine that pushed grilled cheese with Campbell's Cream of Tomato Soup as the ideal lunch combination!
To be just right, it has to be followed up with Jello.

Bacon
Velveeta (it melts better than regular cheese.)
Possibly a tomato
Whole wheat bread
and the perfect amount of butter...
It's gotta be golden, not burnt! The bread should be crisp on the outside (the part that was grilled) and soft in the center. There should be enough cheese that it is starting to drip out, but it's not coming out yet.
It's the perfect combination!

I add a slice of every cheese we have in the house, normally American, Swiss, Provalone and Cheddar. Then after you butter-up the bread (and before grilling) sprinkle grated Parmesan on the outside. When grilling, the Parmesan browns nicely and adds a unique "toasted" flavor to the sandwich.
It is a grand way to make the tomato soup into a very special meal. And you will never look at grilled cheese the same way again!

My favorite soup/sandwich combination would be a BLT on sourdough, so long as the tomatoes were straight from the garden, preferably warm, and maybe a nice cream of asparagus soup. This combination just screams "SUMMERTIME!!"

With the cream of tomato soup, definitely grilled cheese, maybe with a little grilled onion. My favorite soup/sandwich combination would be a BLT on sourdough, so long as the tomatoes were straight from the garden, preferably warm, and maybe a nice cream of asparagus soup. This combination just screams "SUMMERTIME!!"
