"The Big Mac is the hamburger consisting of two 1.6 oz (45.4 g) beef patties, iceberg lettuce, American cheese, pickles, onion and special "Mac" sauce (a Thousand Island dressing variant) served on a three part sesame seed bun."

I called the mc Donalds museum and it was closed for the season. I am having a heck of a time finding data on big macs in 1970 however...
If you take a look at this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en4muUSIRT4 you can see the patty size difference. It seems to have gotten a lot smaller today.

I just got off the phone with Mc Donalds corporate headquarters and the customer service rep said "I don't think there is a difference. I will forward this request to the business office and they may or may not contact you." So, the official reply was "I don't think there is a difference..." I might be getting a letter or a call and if at all possible when I do I will post this to this question and or start a question under the topic and label it as "official Mc Donalds reply" I am sorry I could not find out more for you.

I remember information in the movie "super size me" I went and bought the film. There is a person in the film named Don Gorske who it appears has eaten 23,000 big macs since May 17, 1972...In the film he states "the sandwich has gotten smaller."

addtional information on him at.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Gorske
