What is a good recipe for chayote fruit?

got a few of these for sale on the dollar rack at the grocery store but they taste pretty bland raw, is there a traditional way to cook them. any one ever actually tried them?

The only way I find chayotes edible and tasty is "chayotes rellenos".
Ingredients:
4 chayotes
3 spoonfuls of butter
4 spoonfuls of flour
3 spoonfuls of raisins
3 spoonfuls of chopped almonds
1 cup of milk
¼ teaspoonful of salt (be careful, could be a little bit less and you might ruin the whole thing)
1 teaspoonful of vanilla
2 yolks
1 cup of sugar
2 spoonfuls of cornflour (good for atole too)
5 spoonfuls of crushed cookies (Marías will do or any other cheap cookies, although a friend's mom uses some cinnamon)

Instructions:
Cut the chayotes in half (follow the line); boil them until they are soft and BE CAREFUL with the skin because you'll need it later; take the pulp out with a spoon or any other object that can do the task without damaging the skin; put it in a stew and add the milk, butter, sugar, salt, yolks and cornflour. When it gets creamy, add the almonds, vanilla and raisins. Get everything back into the chayote skin, sprinkle with the crushed cookies or cinnamon and bake for 20 minutes at 350 C.

It's easier than what it seems and it's also very tasty. Give it a try!

Being the only thing that I can't completely stand to eat, and since my mom made me eat it all the time can tell you that you can't go wrong with it if you put some salt, bit of butter, sour cream and manchego cheese (cheddar would do just fine) on top of it, put it in the ove to grate and that's it!
(just remember to skin the chayote and remove all of its thorns first. Also, it a good idea to boil it first a bit so it doesn't have to stay in the oven too long for it to cook and burn the chees on top of it).

If you want and you diet permits, a bit of ham right before the cheese is nice too.

This is a possible recipe from Answerbag.

"I make a dish where I take a pork roast, put it a pot with several cut up chayotes, some cobs of corn cut in 1 inch segments, a lime, some cilantro, onions, garlic, several serrano peppers and cover that with water, wine or pork broth. Cover the pot and put it is a 275 degree oven for about 4 hours. serve it with black beans, rice and a bottle of tobasco."

INGREDIENTS

* 2 cubes chicken bouillon, crumbled
* 2 cups hot water
* 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
* 1 small yellow onion, minced
* 3 cloves garlic, minced
* 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
* 2 chayote squashes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
* 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
* salt and ground black pepper to taste
* 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

DIRECTIONS

1. Dissolve the bouillon in the hot water.
2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir the onion, garlic, and red pepper in the butter until the onion is soft. Add the squash, 2 tablespoons cilantro, salt, and pepper and stir continually for 5 minutes. Stir in the bouillon mixture and 1 tablespoon cilantro; cover. Simmer about 20 minutes.
3. Pour the mixture into a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into bowls and garnish with a sprig of cilantro to serve.

Chayote has a hint of sweetness to it and is good with stir-fry or soup dishes. Try cooking it with boiled chicken (with onions, garlic, salt and a little soy sauce). The boiled chicken will give it some flavor. You can also stir fry it with other vegetables and the best way to give it some flavor is to cook some ground beef, chopped pork, or baby shrimps with it.
