The doctor will usually specify the type of diet that you are to be on. In some parts of the US I have seen caloric count diet such as 1800 ADA no sugar added diet. The ADA stands for American Diabetes Association. Your doctor wants you to follow ADA recommendations for an 1800 cal. diet but do not use sugar in the diet.
I would visit this site for great information that is helpful and accurate: http://www.diabetes.org/food-nutrition-lifestyle/nutrition.jsp
As always to be certain check with your physcian on what he/she wants if there is a specific fruit you are looking for to eat.

A herbal site recommended the following in moderation
pineapple, strawberries, oranges, apricot, currants, peaches, apples, coconut, raspberries, cherries, lemon, lime, and grapefruit and also a good list of herbs that might help as well
http://herbfactory.iinet.net.au/treatments/diabetes.html
And the Diabetes Australia website has recipes as well as recommendations for healthy meals and food choices - there is a lovely recipe for cinnamon peaches :)
http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/en/Living-with-Diabetes/Eating-Well/Recipes/
Overall, they are recommending low sugar fruit with high fiber content and low GI index ( not sure about pineapple, you might need to experiment ) and never sweeten the fruit with extra sugar
I hope these help

A lot of sites mention apple, grapefruit and jambul fruit - apples because of the high pectin content and low sugar, low sugar for grapefruit and jambul for getting rid of excess nitrates ( in the urine ) http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/51250/three_helpful_fruits_for_diabetes_patients.html
