This is a great question. It's always been important to have a good breakfast, but having type 2 diabetes means you have to pay special attention to your diet.

To put it simply , breakfast is important because after sleeping we are low on energy and need food and liquids to get the body going.

For people with Type 2 there are also these important factors to consider:

**Keeping a relatively regular supply of carbohydrates is important, and generally thought to be important in maintaining blood glucose levels.

**A low fat diet is encouraged and soluble fibers help slow the "after meal rise" in glucose levels.

**Healthy in-between meals are important to keep the glucose levels stable

**Planned exercise is important and dietary requirements will need to be adjusted to account for it.

Now, for breakfast that means a combination of the following. The basic idea is to be healthy and regular and sensible.

Nuts, grains, cereals for carbohydrates, soluble fiber
Fruits, vegetables, even dried fruit for fiber
low fat meats, fish
low fat cheese and dairy

A few suggestions

- oat porridge with fresh or dried fruit and yogurt - yum!
- braised tomato with herbs and or onion, garlic, chili mushrooms
- baked beans - low salt and fat naturally! with oh! salad stuff ! fresh herbs!
- fresh steamed fish with steamed rice and ginger slices ! wow!
- a bowl of diced fresh fruit with whole grain toasted bread and cottage cheese
- boiled egg with toast and fried sliced tomato

Just remember it's about being good to your body, being consistent and having a snack every now and then...a carrot to munch, a tub of low fat yogurt, a bowl of fruit, tuna and pasta and fresh fish! the list is endless.

Have fun, be kind and think of crazy combinations!

Try this one - button mushrooms, diced celery, curry powder, chicken stock

Or this one - tuna, toast, tomatoes, tarragon

Oh! - boiled egg sliced on wholegrain toast spread with mustard and a dash of pepper.

...off to cook!

One of the first things I did after learning I head diabetes was get this egg cooker/toaster combination: http://www.amazon.com/Back-Basics-TEM500-Muffin-2-Slice/dp/B000B18P96.

(I have no financial interests in this product in any way) I simply think its a great deal and makes a great breakfast for a diabetic, an egg sandwich. It can also make hard boiled or scrambled eggs and toast. It also has little warmer to heat up a slice of meat to go on top (it won't cook bacon though).

As a vegetarian diabetic I have to be very careful to avoid filling up too much on carbohydrates (which are basically complex sugars). So I like having an egg with a slice of cheese for breakfast (yes obviously I am not vegan).
