Apparently, the answer is "No." The MSNBC article I just referenced mentions research (recent, even) about aspartame - and the conclusion that this artificial sweetener does not, as far as we know, cause cancer, Alzheimer's, et cetera.

However, if you have a rare genetic condition called phenylketonuria, aspartame isn't good for you. Other than that, it appears that aspartame is all right to use as a sugar substitute.
