I love blood oranges. One thing I've learned is that both the interior and exterior can vary in color. In some the outside has a red blush; in others it's like a normal orange. Inside it can be solid dark red, or bright red, or streaked with red.
Here are a few examples:

There's also a cross called Kara Kara oranges, which are sort of pink as opposed to red:

I've never, ever heard of an orange going bad and turning red inside while leaving a perfectly normal exterior, so my guess is you somehow got a blood orange. They're a traditional Italian orange.

Is my orange safe to eat?
I got an orange at the local stop and shop. It smells like and orange, it is not terribly squishy. But the inside is a dark orange/red color.
Now I know blood oranges exist. but i have never seen one/tried one. And this orange wasnt advertised as being a blood orange. It was imported from italy. Thats all i know.
The skin looks like a regular orange, no spots or discoloration, its evenly toned.
The flesh tastes less acidic than I expected it to. Has a strange flavor Ive never tasted before. I picked up two of these oranges and they are both the same.
any thoughts?

It sounds like it may be a blood orange. There are blood oranges that are between "regular" orange color and blood orange color, so maybe your fruit came from a hybrid tree.
