It is really difficult to be sure of the actual number of farms. The index used to make an analysis regarding the agriculture land is 'irrigated land' which is 2,900 sq km (2003) in case of Ethiopia.

* The reason number of farms are not mentioned in the census because they are highly inclined to change. Farmers in Ethiopia re distribute (i.e divide 1 farm in to 3 smaller farms.) farms very frequently without any written evidence or prior evidence. Hence this measure is discarded.

Agricultural development needs to be a primary strategic initiative in Ethiopia. Most of the research seems to indicate that Ethiopia is content with agricultural progress in the last 10 years.

However, 2/3 of the people in Ethiopia are hungry. A more innovative leap forward in agricultural production needs to occur.

Somehow, it is very saddening that no serious effort is seen by the international community in overcoming the problem in a broader sense. The drought hit area has to be brought into a better condition and utilized. Feeding them with imported food is no solution. My sympathies and prayers for them.

The government of Ethiopians hopes that rural farmers will not flee to the city. However, an increasing number of people are migrating to the city in search of food.
