Conundrum is not a Chardonnay wine. It is a proprietary blend of California white grapes, generally Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscat Canelli. Usually there are at least two other grapes, most likely Viognier and Semillon.

The Wagner family of Caymus Vineyards produces this fascinating conundrum (or riddle) of a wine which tastes slightly different each year depending on the blend. The grapes chosen for each year's blend depends on a variety of factors, many of them dependent on the weather.

Generally, the goal of a proprietary blend is to achieve some sort of consistency from year to year as well as a brand identity. That seems to be the case with Conundrum. Last year I had the 2006 Vintage and this year the 2007. I can recommend them both. Try to stay away from any vintage older that 3 years because Sauvignon Blanc should be drunk when young.

Conundrum is widely distributed. However, if you cannot find it and you want to try it after learning to or brushing up on how to taste wine, please check out the locator link below.

P.S I am a sommelier with no commercial or any connection to either the Wagner family or Caymus Vineyards.

OK I'm back to answer the last question about food (I have been thrown off of either Mahalo or the Internet all night over and over again).

Conundrum is a lightly-oaked white blend. It pairs better with a wider range of foods than a typical, overly-oaked, butter-bomb of a California Chardonnay. I have only "cocktailed" with this wine (meaning that I drink it alone as an aperitif before dinner or on its own at a wine bar without or before food. However, you can expect to enjoy this wine with a wide variety of appetizers, entrees, and even some desserts. Give the wine a try with various kinds of cuisines from around the world including Asian and Fusion. Learn what these wines taste like on their own from California: Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Viognier and lightly-oaked Chardonnay, (See How to Taste Wine). Then go back to Conundrumand try to determine if the particular vintage you have is more dominated by Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay and if there is a particularly grapey (Muscat Canelli) flavor...or more of a peach or apricot taste from Viognier. After that its on to food pairing. Look to the wine's website (see below) for more assistance than the back label may offer. Then check out the Food and Wine Pairing and Wine and Food Pairing Mahalo Pages I am in the process of creating. One or both should have a widget soon that will take Mahalo readers to a fantastic wine and food matcher developed by a James Beard award-winning, wine writer and sommelier. She's asked me to send the URLs for the specific Mahalo Pages to her. I'll be sure to post a food and wine pairing question as soon as the widgets are up and running so that Mahaloans will know that this device/database is available to them.

Hi @stanar good to see you. Thanks for the heads up on the permalink, I must have been suffering from a caffeine under-dose while posting.

I figure this is a GREAT answer and does deserve recognition regardless of other answers.
