Well it depends where you go, what kind of chips you use.
Your best bet to have a Mexico City like experience in the United States is going to a Mexican restaurants owned by Mexicans. Small taquerias are great.
The ingredients are exactly the same, the chips are prepared the same way.
The chips in Mexico are tortilla chips, and exclusively tortilla chips, there are not many chips that are made by big companies that are used to eat salsa with.
To sum it up, it depends on where you go in the United States, in a Mexican restaurant, it will be the same ingredients and same chips, in a supermarket, you can find both typical mexican tortilla chips and other, big brand chips. The salsa is usually not as fresh in the supermarket and tends to be a bit less spicy then what one would find in a mexican restaurant / mexico.
