It is type of a German or Austrian pastry. It is my favorite dessert at my local authentic German restaurant and they make it from scratch there. They serve it as a sort of layered bread pudding, filled with cinnamon, raisins and apples and often topped with whipped cream. I have more commonly seen it as a sort of pocket pastry that can be picked up and eaten by hand.
