Pre-workout (my workouts are in the morning first thing), carbs with some simple sugars, i eat wheat toast with some peanut butter and honey, some raisins, and a little bit of lowfat yogurt.
Post-workout, it is best to get some protein, carbs, and sugar to aid in quick recovery and restoration of glycogen. i typically drink a protein shake (but chocolate milk is good too), eat a banana, and have a handful of whole wheat crackers. try to get your post-workout meal in within 1/2 hour or 45 minutes after your workout.

I like to eat some kind of complex carbohydrate (pasta, rice, preferably wheat pasta or brown rice) about an hour or two before a workout and then replenish your body with a protein and plenty (chicken, protein drink, etc) of liquid (water is the best) after the workout.

The body uses carbohydrates as fuel, so eat plenty of carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, fruits and vegetables before exercise. About 2 hours post exercise, protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats should be eaten because your muscles use these foods to recuperate.
