From personal experience, I can tell you...yes, it's a great workout! I get easily bored with most cardio, so I have to constantly try new things to keep me into it. I love Carmen Electra's aerobic striptease collection. It's high-energy and never boring. It takes so much strength to do pole dancing! Check out this video:

It's not only a good workout, it's a form of dancing combined with gymnastics. So, if you think of it like gymnastics, it's certainly a good work out. Pole dancing uses muscles you never knew you had, but the classes tend to be expensive. The workout is good because it's both aerobic and anaerobic exercise that works with using your body as a resistance. With pole dancing you can increase your upper body strength and tone your entire body. As you rap your legs around a pole you can strengthening your arms as they pull you up.

YES! My wife, a very successful advertising agency exec, was volunteering as an S-factor trainer (level 6) when I met her. Great for strength building, flexibility, and stamina. Plus (and maybe the best part) I get GREAT side benefits! :)
Yeah, but the more maneuvers you do, the more calories you burn. Not to mention the dollar bills I burn. Especially when you can jump up and swing at the same time so that you can gradually, yet quickly turn upside down, and stretch, and then touch your toes...

Not that I've been in many, many, many years... but from what I remember of my youth, the pro's who dance on poles professionally never seemed to be out of breath or working up a sweat.
But then again, maybe pole dancing is like Yoga or Ti-chi and it's more about muscle movement, balance and isometric stuff then activity and target heart rate.
So, yeah, I think that the answer is, "it matters how you do it."
But I think it's like any exercise, it depends on how you do it.
