I am not worried about the swimming but am trying to get a training schedule - not sure how long a beginning will take to swim 400 meters.

Hey, this article is not swimming specific, but it should give you excellent guidelines to what you should be doing to improve your distance, speed, and overall ability. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/cb10.htm
I think if you just follow the advice given in that article, you will find that you just build up to 400m and will be able to do it with little trouble very soon
