Garmin 405 vs, Polar 8xx, 7xx.etc
my vote would be not to get a 405 and get a 305 instead.
they are much much cheaper and more versatile for us as triathletes (it is a perfect duathlon watch)
there are some reasons to opt for the 405 over the 305 though.. i will let others chime in here, but i would say the biggest advantage is the size.. the 305 is much bigger (but i never have issues with that).
an interesting new advantage i had appear the other day with the 305, is that you get 1 more datafield.
i raced a half marathon and wanted to maintain a very specific pace.. so i had four datas shoing on my watch; HR, Pace, Current Lap Pace (every 1km) and Total Average Pace.
worked perfectly for me.
one of your questions about being directionally challenged.. both the 305 and 405 are not navigation devices and neither has a map on it etc.. i can only talk about the 305 (but i think it has more features than the 405.. i think) but it does have a breadcrumb trail that you can follow. and i know some have used it for that, but is not a no-brainer exercise. if several turnings are close together then it is hard to decide what the breadcrumb trail means.

regarding polars.. the 200 you have is a great watch. with the footpod etc i am not sure how much more added value you are getting by buying a new unit.
if you have a lot of historic data in the polar software then may make more sense to stick with polar?
but polar is definitely not a navigation thing.
if you were sticking with polar then to get the extra benfit you really need to look at the 800CX, but then you have a separate GPS unit to carry (not that bad)
i am a happy garmin user for a couple of year and before that i was a polar diehard.
garmin products are not as polished as polar but garmin i think are heading in the right direction..
i now use an Edge 705 in addition to my Forerunner 305 and with that i can get a quarq or other Ant+ PM later on.
and with the 705 you do have navigation
(some people do run with the 705... but it is a big piece of equipment to have on your arm)
