That's a juvie bowfin. They don't always look like that but just look at the site I put in the source.
Asker's rating:
Thank you for the information. I am overwhelmed at catching something so far from the norm in that spot.

Igalatea, that link did not take me to the juvenile bowfin. Here is a better link from the site you recommended, followed by the photo:

http://www.wiscfish.org/fishid/wFrmAllImages.aspx?fid=24&comName=Bowfin&sfName=amia calva&fam=Bowfins (Amiidae)&GID=37&show=7&selText=0

I believe you are correct - the fish look alike!

And after doing a little more searching, I found an anglers' group (http://www.bowfinanglers.com/). Their logo says "America's toughest sportfish for 100,000,000 years!". A curious note - they have a primitive lung and have been seen to gulp air at the water's surface!

Nod I basically thought they'd be able to go down the page and see the name bowfin as well as use the link for any other fish they might be curious about. :) Thanks for the supporting post.

Thinkphd,
Thank you for providing a better link and picture of the fish. It helped to verify that lgalatea was correct.

Thank you again.

I can't see your photo on this computer; but, if you caught a strange fish in the Saginaw river that you describe so wildly, maybe it was a Round Goby. It's one of those invasive species that is coausing so much trouble. See if it looks like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8c/RoundGoby2.jpg/240px-RoundGoby2.jpg
or
http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/news/chiefeditor/RoundGoby-picture.jpg

If so, I can find more links; but, once you know the name it's easy. If not, I'll try again when I get home.

It is a Bowfin also called Amia calva by scientist.
It is raw finned fish of the Amiidae family
these links would give you a clear insight of the fish
