If you are 23 years of age or older, your automatically deemed an independent student by the Federal government, and will most likely have "Family Contribution dollar rating of 0, and you only answer questions according to that fact.

Many schools, however, will ask to see your family information to determine if you qualify for institutional scholarships. Consequently, simply being over 23 years of age or older does not necessarily deem you independent to the school.
