Yes! I gave up doing them for myself a few years ago because I inevitably screw it up the first try and think I'm going to owe some outrageous amount of money. Then I used to put off facing the problem again until April 1, after worrying for 2+ months. Now I have a delightful preparer who even sends me a notice of the appointment he's scheduled for me. We get a paper copy, but it's filed electronically. It's worth the money for me - and I've already received our federal refund check!

Yes. Matter of fact I was able to beat my dad, who is always reminding me to make sure I get mine done early. We had a family multiple birthday dinner, and of course he started to remind me to get mine done "because you really need to be on top of these things." My refund should be back this week, while he just had his done yesterday! Some years this would not have been true. For some reason my husband and I have always had an employer that bent the law until it broke in not getting the right forms to us until February and even March. One never mailed them until requested, so we'd get down to April 10th and realize we'd never seen them. Unfortunately it was after leaving this employer that I found out they're supposed to mail them in January!
I use a local, non-chain tax preparer who e-files them. I have business expenses to worry about, so it's better to have him do them.

Nope, still procrastinating, but when April 13th or so rolls around, I'll be filing federal online for free and mail in my paper state return because I'm a cheapskate and can't be bothered to pay to do my state return online. But I'm single and my taxes are easy! Otherwise I'd probably invest in some software like Turbotax.

Done. Used TurboTax Deluxe 2008. Great software. Made filing in multiple states a whole lot easier!

freetaxusa.com I used them this year and last year. The forms on screen look identical to the paper forms (i.e. If you're inputting a 1099, the boxes on the screen match up with the boxes on the actual paper). Free for Federal, $10 for State. Did them first of February, direct deposit of Fed 8 days later, State 3 days after that.

I always do my taxes as early as possible. There's no sense in allowing the government to keep my money longer than they have to. I should be collecting interest on that money, not them. I filed in the last week of January, the day after I received my last W2 and 1099-INT. I used taxact.com to file Federal for free (my refund was deposited on 2/6/09), and then filled out New York's IT-201 form as a modifiable PDF, and mailed it in because I couldn't find any free-file for New York State. That deposit was received on 3/16/09.

I always wait until the last minute to do my taxes, so I haven't done it yet. But being a simple wage slave, my tax return is pretty simple. I use the online service that H&R Block offers. They make your previous data available, so if you have the same job from year to year it makes it pretty painless to file. I've been using it for the last four years or so and have never had a single problem or complaint about it. If you have more complex needs, they suggest other services that you can add on as you go through the process, including stopping the whole thing and letting an accountant look it over.
