Who makes the best cupcakes in New York City?

I just had a delicious cupcake at Magnolia's, but I'm wondering if there are any other places you'd recommend. I've tried Crumbs and like those as well, but who do you think makes the best in NYC?

This is an easy one: Magnolia Bakery http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com/
My wife can eat like.... well, I better not say. ;-

Asker's Rating:
• Had to go with Magnolia's but everyone had some great suggestions! I would say the Buttercup Bake Shop http://www.buttercupbakeshop.com is a close second or even tied with Magnolia's but this answer really provided a great picture of the cupcakes.

I go there too much! There has to be another cupcake shop. You should see the new boxes they make for cupcakes in 2009, they actually have holders inside that make certain the cupcakes no longer move around. They no longer sell 4 packs, it's either 2 or 6. Can you rank the top 10 cupcake shops in NYC?

Crumbs: http://www.crumbsbakeshop.com/

Never been to Magnolia before but Crumbs is amazing. You can get giant cupcakes in a variety of different flavors for about $4 each. Kinda pricey, but definitely worth a try. How often do you get to eat a giant cupcake? :-)

I really wish I didn't know so much about this- but two faves that beat out Magnolia: Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery on LES & Batch on W. 10, east of 7th Ave S. Batch has extraordinary and unusual flavors. Wish I had some now...ibidibid

Billy's Bakery in Chelsea has the best Red Velvet cupcakes I've tried anywhere (and I've tried many):

Billy's Bakery
184 9th Ave (bet W 21st and W 22nd St)

Here's the obligatory pretty pictures :)

I hope Crumbs in NYC is better than their branches in LA. They seem to substitute way too much vegetable shortening in place of butter. Definitely one of the more disappointing cupcakes I've tried.

Definitely interesting. I've yet to try these, but from the pictures and from what I've heard, these are right on par with Magnolia's.

I'd opine that they have a slight edge over Magnolia (though I've only been to Magnolia twice). They're definitely in a different league than Crumbs, though, who use primarily vegetable shortening rather than butter in their frosting.

I've tried most (if not all) of the above shops, but in my opinion, I've found the best tasting cupcakes at Buttercup Bakeshop. There's a location on 2nd Ave between 51st and 52nd. There's also a location on West 72nd between Columbus and Amsterdam.

Interestingly enough, the person behind this shop started Magnolia's Bakery.
