What is the difference (besides 20 cents) between a McDouble and a Double Cheeseburger?

They seem to have taken the Double Cheeseburger off the dollar menu and charge $1.19 for it in most places. But no there is a McDouble on the dollar menu that seems to be the same thing. Why have both? What's the difference?

The mcdouble has one slice of cheese, the double cheeseburger has two.

The mcdouble has 390 calories and 19g of fat, the double cheeseburger has 440 calories and 23 grams of fat. You can see all the nutritional info at http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/nutritionexchange/nutrition_facts.html

They introduced the mcdouble to replace the $1 double cheeseburger and raised the price of the double because it wasn't making enough profit.

I asked the "may I help you dude" at the McDonald's drive thru once. He said it's the number of cheese slices. The McDouble has 1, the Double Cheeseburger has 2.

The worst part is that the 'cheese' is probably about as far as one could get from being cheese and still be considered cheese. *blech*

I've been to the corporate headquarters too - lots of wood and stone design - reminds me of a public school gone wrong. The cool thing was all the free pop (soda, whatever your local slang is), in the child size cups.
