Personally, I think they look comfortable and enjoyable. I'd like to go swimming in one of those and spend a day poolside in my backyard wearing one! I think they're beautiful and look very breezy, casual, and relaxing.
But that's the problem, isn't it?
It's so comfortable and nice I'd be happy to wear it out to run errands. And that's a health hazard. People who wear swimsuits in area other than pools collect germs, bacteria, and even fungus - and then dip all of this junk right into pool water to share with others. BLECCCH!

In the US, our swimming restrictions aren't as tight as some European countries (like France!), so I've seen plenty of women cruising around town in their bikini tops (Ick! Boobs-a-poppin'!). So it's the same problem.
But in France....that's very strictly not allowed. Similarly, you're supposed to cover your hair before entering a public pool. And men must even wear tight butt-hugging swimsuits - no baggy shorts. If their country's health standard is that meticulous, than it makes sense that the Burquini is not allowed.

So what about President Sarkozy's objection based on women's rights? I think a bathing suit objection is the wrong forum to initiate social, political, and religious change. If the burqa practice in Muslim society bothers Pres. Sarkozy, he's needs to affect political and diplomatic change on the international stage.
But using this as an excuse to discriminate against women following common religious law is wrong.
Besides, if we're going to judge women's swimming attire based on how degrading it is to our gender, then I want THIS BANNED IMMEDIATELY!:

As with any other style of clothing, or lack thereof, it should be allowed at the beach. It is not appropriate for public swimming pools as those have health and security concerns.

This is very similar to a dive skin, which I have worn to go Scuba Diving and snorkeling. A dive skin protects you from the sun, coral and jelly fish. A dive skin fits a bit closer to the body and usually does not include a hood. A dive skin can also be a great lining under a neoprene wet suit.

In August 2009, controversy erupted when a woman in France was prevented from swimming in a public pool wearing a burkini. It emerged this was due to a long-standing law that prohibited many forms of swimwear from use in public pools, rather than the result of political position on the garment.
"Burqini", a portmanteau of burqa (body) and bikini, is a registered trademark.

The security aspects are a whole other can of worms. It brings up visual pattern matching, evolution, animal psychology, mass hysteria.
A whole lotta baggage comes with a persons choice to wear a label that says Muslim, Jew, gay, or pretty much any X in a Y society.
Wear a flannel shirt at a preppy school? Man, John Hughes had a field day with the Breakfast Club.
I'm glad their not black. That would be depressing. I laugh at all of the the black wool swimming dresses that people wore at the turn of the century, both men and women...nobody protested back then.

It reminds me of that old Star Trek episode where Kirk and crew visit that planet hugely overpopulated, with throngs of people huddled together like sardines in their burqini-like outfits.
Religion (in this case Islam) decrees that women must hide their bodies from all but their betrothed, which seems pretty silly and demeaning to me. For all we know, if God exists, God created man and woman, and created them buck-naked. Clothing is a creation of humanity, some might argue that free will led to the creation of clothing and similar trappings.
Who are we, as Its mere creations, to then put words in God's mouth and suggest that women cover themselves up with human-made clothing to abide by Its supposed rules?
God is really such a slacker when it comes to setting down rules for Its creations to abide by. It really needs to set up a Wiki, hold press conferences, something.

one of the purposes is to keep ur best clothes dry cause u wear an alternative swim wear.
the so called bikini was intended to be worn by those who want to get themselves tanned.
it so became a style statement by those who wanted to show that they are sexy.
any clothe is suitable.
the burqini cant be complained as it still serves the purpose.

It is ugly. It is inappropriate for swimming. It insults women. As with any other style of clothing, or lack thereof, it should be allowed at the beach. It is not appropriate for public swimming pools as those have health and security concerns.

I don't like the insinuation of "security concerns"... are you suggesting that women wearing burqini's might be hiding a weapon or bomb under their clothing?
Not quite sure about the health concerns, either. How is this different from wearing bermuda shorts and a t-shirt while swimming at a public pool?

Yes, or a man might, since if they are allowed for women they would be allowed for men. I am thinking of typical American urban public pools. Health and security are major concerns which have nothing to do with current politics.

I don't know @albanian - I'm a woman, a fairly liberal minded one, and I am not insulted by the burqinis! As long as it's the woman's *choice* to wear modest clothing, I think it looks comfortable! I think it's a whole lot less demeaning than most bikinis! (says the bikini owner...)

It insults women because it says their body is bad or sinful and must be hidden. You don't see them making burkini's for men. It is quite possible for women to choose to insult their own or other women's bodies; but, that is still what they are doing.
There is nothing demeaning about a bikini, even a tiny one. If men are going to look at you in a demeaning manner they will whatever you are wearing.

I would not wear one. I do not see how you could be comfortable swimming in all that clothing. Now I can see it if you were deep sea fishing or snorkeling, but if you wore that to our community pool LOL, you would be not only be staired at, talked about but I am sure laughed at as well. Now this is something I would wear !! Too cute, the Burquni NOT !!

It looks really uncomfortable to be going swimming in. I understand that in their culture the women are to be completely clothed when out in public but to me this seems to be going a little extreme. Going swimming is supposed to be a enjoyable and fun time I just don't see how it could be in one of these. On the plus side no need to worry about getting burnt.

Not really for me, but I agree with the poster that if someone is uncomfortable they should be allowed to wear it. However if it is done for religious reasons and in say secular western countries then I have a problem because I think the rules were set up by men and women are being treated as if they are second class citizens and this goes against what system is supposed to stand for and as far as I am concerned our concepts of freedom trump anyone’s religious beliefs.

The ladies which choose to wear the burquini are not hurting anyone. There was one such lady in my daughter's swimming class. The worst that had happened was she attracted a few curious looks. If that is what makes you comfortable at the beach, rock on!

I think the Burqini is great if it broadens the life experience of those with strict religious or cultural views. It can also give more freedom for those with sensitive sking. A dive skin is really designed for swimming. This burqini is not. Try swimming in loose material. Also, with regard to public pools, try concealing anything in tight material.

A burqini (or burkini) swimsuit is a type of swimsuit for women designed by Lebanese Australian Aheda Zanetti under the company name Ahiida. The suit covers the whole body except the face, the hands and the feet (enough to preserve Muslim modesty), whilst being light enough to enable swimming. It was described as the perfect solution for Muslim women who want to swim but are uncomfortable about "revealing" bathing suits; see sartorial hijab for more information on modest Muslim dress. Well...if I can board a plane wearing a jacket, ball cap, and a surgical mask...I think the swimming public can adapt. I had a medical reason for wearing the mask, and the flight crews were understanding. The security aspects are a whole other can of worms. I think that it should be allowed to wear. If it's for religious purposes why not, it's not like wearing it makes something illegal happen. I do have to say, that muslim religion is a bit strict on women. If I was a Muslim woman, I would do what ever I liked. You can't wear those dresses...... Watch me!
