It's best to have a few different ones, to match to your wardrobe on different days. You wouldn't want to buy a white scarf, and get caught wearing it with a white sweater, now would you!
On that note... a few colors I think would look nice on you;
1. A classic black and white houndstooth pattern. Very popular nowadays, and for good reason! Back and white goes with absolutely EVERYTHING. And considering few other items come in the same pattern, you'll rarely have an issue of clashing patterns.
Here is a picture (the one on the left of course)

2. A aqua or teal green. You would of course wear that with neutral colors, but it would add some color to your wardrobe and match your complexion and hair well

I really like the looks of this scarf -> http://supermarkethq.com/pictures/0002/2442/teal_f_birds_supermarket2.jpg
3. An olive color (similar to the title on this website!). Again, I think it would match your look nicely. Same as the strings on your sweater!

Good luck!

Pick your general hair/skin colour (nothing like it on a colour wheel but the closest is red. Look directly across the colour wheel for your best complementary colour (blue or green). From experience, I know green would bring out your natural colours most effectively.
If you want to find two colours, start at red and measure 1/3 clockwise and 1/3 anti-clockwise. These colours are guaranteed to work together. It's scientifically proven that using this rule to choose clothing or to select a paint scheme for your house will mean the colours will complement one another.
It's important to remember that it's no good to say, "Ah, I like that colour!". It's more important to ask, "Does this colour like ME?".

• Great ideas! Though I think I might play it safe and start with a thick grey scarf, these are some great images to give me ideas for future fashion combos. Thanks!

anything with mid tone or dark tone in color.. a solid color will go far for a single scarf... black, gray, midnight blue, dark green, red etc... patterns are also fashionable to wear with a solid color shirt or sweater.

You look like an English chap, and even if you aren't, it isn't a bad look if you pull it off. Some of the best scarves are a mixture of a few colors, like a brown, gray, and black, which would work for you. Solid colors, though often seen as boring can actually bring a bit of contrast to your wardrobe. If you're wearing darker colors one day, like brown or black, consider wearing a medium blue or red scarf to bring out your face more, adding the accent color to your neck will put more attention on your smile. If you're wearing a brighter blue, go with a dark black, brown, or even a gray scarf with a lighter stripe, which will again add like a negative contrast which is appealing and even stunning. Good luck!

Not an English chap at all, but I take that as a compliment, mate.

It is good to start out with a few random solid colors. Think of the patterns in the clothes you are wearing. Black and a brown are good starters. Black will go with all other colors where black shoes or a black coat would suffice and browns will go with your browns, golds, burgandies, etc. Expand as you start getting outfit specific scarfs.

whats wrong with red?... opposites attract. he obviously has a few colors on deck... blue shirt, moss green sweater, blue jeans... a red scarf could work well. a white scarf with his outfit would be a no-no because of his color scheme.
please post something informative rather than do's and dont's, maybe as to why he shouldnt wear red with his outfit?.... thanks!

Scarves are totally last season dude. If you want to update your style, and create a unique personal brand, go with hammer pants. They are back in style. And whatever you do, DO NOT buy one of those terrorist scarves. Those went out of style in like 2006. I can give you my old one.
