I think she makes a statement with each outfit she wears. Her choice of clothing seems to make people like her more, thinking "this woman is real." It also helps that she's one of the youngest First Lady's we've had in our generations. You just can't compare the wardrobe of 62-year-old Laura Bush to 45-year-old Michelle Obama.
Wearing designs from affordable places gives her instant credibility and likability from many American women.

I think EVERYONE tries to make a statement (consciously or unconsciously) with their fashion statement. I think Michelle Obama's statement is... I'm an intelligent, professional, thoughtful person.
