What are the best places to find free (legal) VST instrument and effects plugins on the net?

I have host software... Looking for analog modeled synths, drum machines and the like, as well as some processing plugs. There's a lot of trash and phishy-looking websites when searching. Anyone know the sites with the legal, rights-cleared VST and VSTi 's?

KVR Audio may be the best site for VST pugins. It's a great site with a huge list of instrument and effects plugins both free and commercial. You can find the ones with the best ratings to get a good idea of which ones to start with first.
